Week 3, Day 2 in the Books!

Plyometrics:  "The Mother of all P90X workouts" couldn't be further from the truth!  Started without our third team member, but she said that she would do the workout at her house as soon as she gets home!

That's the beauty of P90X -- you determine when you can make the time for it.  It can also be a downfall of the program, because it's so easy to make excuses to not press play.  I'm confident that she is holding true to the schedule and burning through those calories!

It's a love-hate relationship with Plyometrics.  I love the sense of accomplishment after 1 hour of jump training.  My legs are on fire the majority of the time.  My legs quiver from all the squats.  By the mid point, I hit a wall and think I can't go any further, but I look over at my wife and she is doing her best.  This is a true motivator in every sense for me.  So, I continue to push on to finish the exercise and the video.

I take some comfort in the fact that we will not be doing Plyometrics for two weeks.  Next week, we start on the recovery week of Phase I before the transition into Phase II.  This week is exciting, because after the recovery week, I will get to take my 30 day photos and see what progress my body has made.

I'm not expecting huge changes.  However, I am hopeful that I will see some differences in measurements, as well as overall appearance.  I will definitely post those pictures to the blog as soon as I can take them.

Summary of my workout:  It was grueling, but in a good way.  I was drenched in sweat during the cool down phase, and now the smell of the wife cooking up a healthy meal is filling the house.  I will reward myself with some lean protein (chicken breast), some whole wheat pasta (the good kind too!) and some spinach, bell peppers and corn thrown into the mix.  All in all, it's a good filling meal, with a little bit of carbs, that I feel is great to have after a workout like Plyometrics.

Speaking of diet.  I use My Fitness Pal to track all my caloric needs.  It's a handy free online tool that has a huge database of nutritional information for all sorts of foods.  It really helps me keep my food intake at the 50/30/20 protein/carbs/fat ratios.  I fully intend on posting my meals on this blog to give those of you reading an idea of what I eat on a daily basis.  Of course, you can always look for me on that site and add me as a friend and view my food diary.

Tomorrow's journey will take us into the glamour routine:  Shoulders & Arms with Ab Ripper X.  I like this routine, and I'll elaborate on my experience tomorrow.

For those of you who have fallen upon this blog, let me know what you want to see on here so I can make this as informative as possible!  If you're on the cusp of ordering your P90X DVDs, and have some hesitation, please drop me a comment to ask me for what I think about the program.  I'm here to not only keep myself on track, but to help out like minded individuals to the best of my ability.

However, please note that I have zero qualification or certification in the areas of physical fitness or nutrition.  I will lend advice on what worked for me, and me alone.  If you are considering a workout regimen, then seek the advice of your doctor.  Conversely, if you're looking at taking on a diet program, visit with a dietician before making huge changes to your routine.

Until tomorrow!

Week 3 Day 1 Done!

I'm trying to catch this blog up as quickly as possible!

Yesterday, we completed Chest & Back/Ab Ripper X.  It was a great workout.  I can feel myself being able to knock out more and more pushups!

Pullups continue to be a bother, but I'm persistent with the pull up bar.  I previously completed 15 reps on the pull up exercises, and managed to push myself to do 20 this time around.  My goal is to complete one regular pull up by end of month to gauge where I'm at strength-wise!

Had some problems with the diet this weekend as we had family over.  BBQ was in full swing, and I managed to eat my fair share of carne asada!  Although I'm disappointed, I have no one to blame but myself and now I can identify how much I can eat without overeating.  But as of yesterday, I'm back on target with the diet, eating my normal routine, and consuming my target 1900 calories each day.

I just got a text from the wife's cousin:  Are we on for today?  I reply with a hardy "YES! PLYOMETRICS!!!"  I'm looking forward to the jump training and burning more "goo" off my body!

This morning, I weighed myself to see where I'm at, and I was disappointed to learn that I am at 223 pounds.  On Saturday, I was at 221.  Apparently, my deeds from the BBQ this weekend are paying me back with 2 pounds gained on the scale.

Disappointing for sure, but I'm still determined to stick with my diet and continue pressing on!  Will update you all tomorrow on how Plyometrics went!

Weeks 1-2 Complete

This blog was created after I started my P90X journey.  Having typed that, I wanted to recap:

  • Week 1:  P90X Classic
I started the program on the 8th of January.  The first workout was Chest & Back, followed by Ab Ripper X. Now, I prefer to knock out Ab Ripper X after the workout for a couple of reasons.  First, I'm already in the "zone."  Second, it's only 15 minutes.

But, as with anything in P90X, there is no ordinary workout that will not leave you drained, breathless, and outright hurting for more.  So was the case with day 1 of my 90 day journey.  Having been through the routine twice before, I knew exactly what my body was going to tell me the day after -- "what are you doing to me?"

I finished the workout as scheduled and I was proud of the fact that I started out, pressed play, and finished. Baby steps...

The days that followed came with contributing factors (positive ones) that I hadn't had in the past.  For starters, I had a workout partner for Plyometrics!  My wife's cousin joined in on the workouts and it was great having someone there to push and keep each other going through the 1 hour cardio.

After that day, my wife surprised us both by joining in on Shoulders & Arms and Ab Ripper X.  It was apparent that we were going to keep true to our New Year resolution and keep pushing ourselves through the 90 day journey.

We finished out the first week pretty strong.  My wife and cousin missed the first exercise, but it's no biggie...I now have support and motivators to keep me going past my previous attempts!  On top of all that, since I'm the "veteran", they affectionately call me "coach."  That's a good feeling!

  • Week 2
The second week was a rehash of the first one.  All three of us showed up and pressed play at 5pm every single day of the week.  We are talking about fitness, healthy food choices, recovery drinks and the like.  This is a great feeling knowing that the support system is keeping itself together and motivated to continue on and see where this journey leaves us!

Saturday morning we completed our last workout of the week:  Kenpo X.  By far this our favorite of them all.  It's kicking and punching, and an overall great cardio workout.  It goes by very fast, and when the video is finally over -- we're all drenched with sweat, ready to go some more!

My final thoughts for these past two weeks:

1.  Keep at it.  You're going to be sore here and there.  That's a good thing.  You're pushing your body to new heights and testing the limits.

2.  Eat right.  We went to Costco and bought in bulk everything we would need to sustain a healthier in house meal schedule and it's been working great!  We've been going through water left and right, and I found myself craving one of my protein bars by 10:30 am for my mid morning snack.

3.  Results!  It's a marathon, not a sprint!  I keep looking at myself in the mirror and see changes here and there, but like everyone else, I want to see the results NOW!  Got to keep at it, and in due time, I will be rewarded accordingly!

The Journey Begins

I created this blog primarily to keep a daily journal of what it's like for an average guy going through the various trials and tribulations of getting fit with P90X.

I first learned about P90X from an old roommate of mine who was vigorously working out in the living room.  When I happened upon him, he was almost done with Plyometrics...the dreaded cardio routine that leaves all in a pool of sweat and tears, but with a high sense of accomplishment once completed.  I asked him during a water break what he was doing.  All he said was "P90X...it kicks your ass."

I never once saw one of the famous informercials prior to that, so I had no idea that such a program could exist, or even people would actually put themselves through something like that.  As the days progressed, I looked on as he was doing these workouts, and I became more and more convinced that I had to jump on board, and do something about my weight.

That was three whole years ago....

I did the first month of the program.  I witnessed amazing results.  I was pleased with how flat my mid section was becoming and then a cold hit me.  I was down for a week and all momentum was gone.  So, the DVDs began to collect dust, and then more dust.  I picked up the program again about a year ago and decided to have a decent return on my investment.  Afterall, the dumbells were getting rusty as well!

So, I got over the 30 day hump, and finished the first week of Phase II of the program.  And just like that...I stopped again!  Looking back, I haven't the slightest clue as to what prompted me to stop.  I'll chalk it up to pure laziness and lack of commitment to finish what I started.

Fast forward to today...

It's the start of the New Year.  My wife and I are getting formally married by the church in six months, and I've ballooned to a whopping 226 pounds.  This new year was going to start out right, start with much needed changes.  We decided that 2013 was going to be the year where we stopped eating out so much, and took care of ourselves.  Afterall, we have a wedding to host and we both want to look great!

So, in summary, this blog is designed to chronicle my thoughts and progression through the program.  Every single "up" and "down", and I'm not talking about push ups either.

Sit back, and enjoy the ride as I journey to complete 90 days of hard work, with the hope of glorious results!
